Tax evaders to face action after Jan 1: Tareen

ISLAMABAD: Around two million people, including parliamentarians, who have been identified as income tax ‘evaders’, will face strict action from January 1, 2010, if they fail to file their returns by December 31.
Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen told reporters at Parliament House on Tuesday that notices would be issued to both, those who had a national tax number (NTN) and did not file their returns, and the people who neither had an NTN nor filed returns. “If action can be taken against the US vice president for not paying taxes, then nobody is immune from this, including parliamentarians. I should also be held accountable if I don’t discharge my tax liability,” Tareen added.
He said notices would also be issued to parliamentarians and other “rich people” so that they contribute to the national exchequer according to their taxable income. Tareen said the Federal Board of Revenue’s tax collection target was Rs 10 billion short of the intended target of Rs 368 billion for the July-October period of the 2009-10 fiscal year.
